Elon Musk Wants In, First Global AI Resolution: AI Updates WORTH Knowing
Happy Friday and welcome back👋
There are some important AI updates you SHOULD know about, let’s dive right in!👇️
GROK1’s Open Release🤖
Remember not too long ago Elon Musk was suing OpenAI for deviating from their original principles of being open source and non-profitable? 🙄
Well, his attempts to put down OpenAI seem to be in full swing. GROK1, the competitor to ChatGPT and largest model to be open-sourced yet, was launched by Musk and the X team earlier this week. This is also the model behind the xAI chatbot.
xAI says that Grok was inspired by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. "It is intended to answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask."💡
The model contains 314 billion parameters and requires hardware with adequate GPU memory to run.
Unlike other LLMs on the market though, Grok can access real-time data of everyone's Xeets through X.com. 🤯
So far the response to Grok1 has been lacklustre, but this real-time data access will definitely make for some interesting experiments in the coming days. 📆
UN Adopts FIRST Resolution on Artificial Intelligence
The United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted its first global resolution on artificial intelligence, focusing on personal data protection, risk monitoring, and human rights safeguarding 🛟
The adopted text was US-led draft resolution emphasising the respect, protection, and promotion of human rights in the design, development, deployment, and use of AI. Other than US, more than 120 member states "co-sponsored" or supported the text.🌍️
Following up on the first World AI Summit held at the end of last year, this initiative is part of global efforts to regulate AI's development.
NVIDIA Launches Powerful New AI Chip
The Blackwell 200 GPU is NVIDIA’s newest AI chip which, they claim, is the “world’s most powerful chip for AI”. ⏩️
The new chip is 10-100x faster than its predecessors and consumes 25x less energy, which means AI models can now learn and evolve at speeds they haven’t before.😯
Currently, the hot and in-demand H100 chip is powering the AI boom. But everyone including Microsoft, OpenAI, Meta, Google and Tesla will be using the Blackwell 200 GPU. Read more here.
Apple…and Google? 👀
Apple is apparently meeting with both Google and OpenAI to license their respective AI systems to power new features in the iPhone OS that will be released later this year.📱
Apple is allegedly in "active negotiations" to licence Google's Gemini system, however the company has considered employing OpenAI's methodology.🤔
Google has previously paid Apple billions of dollars every year to make its search engine the default option in Safari. So if Apple does pursue a partnership with Google, it would expand on their prior search agreement.
What AI capabilities will the new iPhones have in your opinion?
