➡️ Is ChatGPT Getting Dumber? Explaining AI Drift
Maybe you’ve experienced it yourself or read the rumours doing the rounds online: ChatGPT does not seem to have the same “aha” quality it initially did.🫤
Makes you wonder—
Is ChatGPT getting dumber❓️
Not exactly, but it is getting comparatively inaccurate.
Now this feels counterintuitive, because if generative AI models use user input to continuously train themselves, they should become more intelligent as they accumulate more user entries over time.🧠
However, there is an explanation.
Something called an AI model “drift”.
A "drift" occurs when large language models (LLMs) act in unanticipated or unpredictable ways that deviate from the original parameters. This could happen if attempts to improve sections of complex AI models force other portions to perform poorly.👎️
Stanford and Berkeley researchers discovered in a recent study that the response accuracy of both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 appeared to deteriorate with time across a number of tasks.📉
At the same time, the study also implies that GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 may be improving in other areas of performance.
This is just a reminder to emphasise on the importance of continuing to evaluate LLM behaviour, and to never blindly rely on AI-generated data.💡
